Beyond the Classroom

Strategic plans for the College include broadening the scope of the educational experience: extracurricular activities that complement the classroom, four years at Columbia that fit in a lifelong trajectory of personal growth and career development, and internships that connect students with New York City and the world beyond. Campaign donors enable Columbia to provide academic advising, career counseling, and extracurricular experiences commensurate with our academic offerings.

Student life goals include expanded annual and endowment giving in support of advising, career counseling, internships, and other extracurricular programming.

Internships and Research Opportunities

Opportunities for advanced study and practical work across all the fields of science, humanities, arts, and social sciences include internships of many kinds, such as those for the I. I. Rabi Scholars, which provide paid research opportunities for top science students. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships also form a key component of teaching and learning at the College and need to be expanded, as do summer opportunities for students working on projects in the arts and other fields.
