School of Social Work

Nine of ten students at CUSSW require some form of financial assistance to attend, and the School must remain competitive in offering student aid to the most qualified and motivated students.

Helen and Lou Lowenstein recently donated $100,000 to the Lowenstein Loan Repayment Assistance Fellowship. The Lowensteins are among the school’s most generous donors, having contributed more than $769,000 to date. Since its inception in 2000, the Loan Repayment Fellowship has provided loans to students who require an extra measure of support to attend the school.

Patricia Brozinsky, a friend of the School, has endowed the James A. Gibson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Brozinsky created this scholarship as a tribute to her life partner—who received his master’s degree from CUSSW in 1973—and his career as a psychotherapist and teacher at SUNY-Stony Brook. The scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need, with preference to those with an interest in helping the elderly or disabled.

Dr. Robert N. Butler created his third charitable gift annuity for CUSSW to benefit the Myrna I. Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in honor of his late wife. Myrna Lewis received both her master’s degree and Ph.D. from CUSSW and went on to a notable career as an assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Lewis was internationally renowned for her teaching, writing, leadership, and outstanding achievements in the fields of gerontology and women’s studies. Gifts from Dr. Butler now total $75,000 to the scholarship fund, which was established to enhance diversity.
