Columbia Establishes Tang Center for Early China

Columbia University and its Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures have announced the creation of the Tang Center for Early China. The new center, made possible through a $5 million endowment gift from Oscar Tang and Agnes Hsu-Tang, will help advance society’s understanding of the richness and importance of early Chinese civilizations as part of a broader common human heritage.

Columbia Nursing Awarded $6.5 Million to Educate Nurse Leaders

Columbia University School of Nursing has been awarded a $6.5 million grant from the Helene Fuld Health Trust for three vital projects that will educate future nurse leaders. 

"This generous gift from the Helene Fuld Health Trust - the largest single donation in our school's 123-year history - will enable us to continue a tradition of leadership in nursing education, preparing world-class nurses to meet the challenges of today's dynamic health care environment," said Bobbie Berkowitz, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of Columbia Nursing.

$5M Gift from Japan Establishes New Professorship in Japanese Studies

The government of Japan has donated $5 million to Columbia University to endow the Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy Professorship, which is intended to promote Japanese studies by supporting teaching and research in this subject area.

“Japan’s generous support for Columbia University will foster mutual understanding and advance scholarly conversations about the latest developments in Japanese politics and foreign policy,” said Provost John Coatsworth.

Business School Receives Gift to Establish the Tamer Center for Social Enterprise

Columbia Business School today announced the creation of the Tamer Center for Social Enterprise. The new center, made possible through a transformative endowment gift from Sandra and Tony Tamer will help develop a new generation of business leaders that understand how management can contribute to, enhance, and impact society and the environment. Amelia Alverson Appointed Executive Vice President for University Development and Alumni Relations

Amelia J. Alverson has been appointed executive vice president for university development and alumni relations.  She has served in this role on an interim basis since the spring.

Columbia’s Endowment Investments Generate 17.5 Percent Return in Fiscal 2014

Columbia University produced a return of 17.5 percent on its endowment portfolio for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. This reflects the normal one-quarter lag in private equity and real asset valuations.

The total value of Columbia’s endowment as of June 30 was $9.2 billion. The University’s trailing 5- and 10-year returns—14.2 percent and 11.0 percent, respectively.
